Gear Break: New Zwift Hub One featuring Click & Cog, Cycology Aloha Handlebar Tape, BMC Teammachine R: Redefine Racing, Primal: The BEST Cycling Shorts, Pinarello MYWAY Platform & Muurv Turns Activity Into Equipment

Gear Break: New Zwift’s Hub One makes it easier to jump into Zwift, featuring Click & Cog, Cycology Aloha handlebar tape, BMC Teammachine R: Redefine Racing, Primal: The BEST cycling shorts, Pinarello takes MYWAY platform to the next level and get rewarded for every stride, ride and stroke, as new fitness experience Muurv turns activity into equipment and gear.

Zwift’s New Hub One Makes it Easier to Jump into ZwiftNew trainer expands compatibility through Zwift Cog and introduces virtual shifting

Zwift, the global online fitness platform, is excited to launch Hub One, a new version of the original Zwift Hub Smart Trainer. The new Zwift Hub One is on sale today and makes it even easier to get on Zwift, works with almost any bike, and offers riders fast, smooth, and quiet virtual shifting that was previously only available on smart bikes.

Most visibly different about Zwift Hub One, compared to the original Hub trainer, is the Zwift Cog. In a departure from all previous direct drive trainers, Zwift Hub One replaces the standard cassette with the new Zwift Cog, a revolutionary single cog component that comes pre-installed and allows the trainer to work with almost any 8-12 speed bike. Thanks to its unique design, riders can put chain drops in the past as sides act as a chain retention device.

In addition to its wide compatibility, Zwift Hub One enables cyclists to take advantage of the many benefits of virtual shifting. Virtual shifting, normally only seen on smart bikes, is now available to those who prefer the value and convenience of a trainer. With virtual shifting, cyclists will enjoy shifting free of lag and chain skips, even when shifting under load. Modern smart bikes are now so quiet, the loudest noise when riding actually comes from the bike’s physical drivetrain. With virtual shifting, much of this added noise is eliminated, leaving the rest of your house in peace while you sweat it out in the virtual world of Watopia.

Zwifters will control virtual shifts with the included wireless Zwift Click which easily mounts to any type of handlebar (road, flat, and TT) via two rubber O-Rings. Shifting is as straightforward as you would expect, with plus and minus buttons to shift the gear up or down. From launch, Zwift Hub One comes with 24 gears, offering a range wide enough to tackle any Zwift terrain with minimal jumps between gears.

Zwift’s Hub One trainer is ideally suited to a variety of different bikes, offering the same riding experience regardless of the bike you choose to install on it. To ensure consistency between bikes, Zwift Hub One is able to detect the gear ratios on your physical bike which allows it to set the virtual gears accordingly. It achieves this through a process called ‘real gear ratio calibration.’ The trainer does this within the first few seconds of every ride automatically. Magic. In addition to delivering benefits to those with multiple bikes, real gear ratio calibration offers new benefits to riders using smaller chainrings, like those found on gravel and mountain bikes, preventing those riders from spinning out on flat or downhill terrain in Zwift.

Zwifters who already own a Hub will have two options that will allow them to unlock the benefits of virtual shifting. Once updated to Zwift Hub Firmware version 5.2, or newer, Zwifters who own Zwift Play can turn Virtual Shifting on from their setting menu. Side buttons on the Play Controllers allow for virtual shifting and also bring added benefits of improved game navigation plus steering and braking controls. Zwift Play is compatible with drop handlebars only and is available to purchase separately for $99/€99/£99 via Zwift.com.

For those wishing to upgrade their existing Zwift Hub units, a Zwift Cog + Zwift Click upgrade package will be available for purchase. Zwift Cog comes pre-installed on a freehub and installs easily with the tools included with Zwift Hub. The upgrade bundle will be available for $59.99/£59.99/€59.99 for a limited time after launch, to allow existing Zwift Hub owners to upgrade, down from the full MSRP of $79.99/£79.99/€79.99. The Zwift Play and Click can both be paired with Zwift at the same time, giving riders the option to shift from multiple locations on the handlebar.

In order to use Virtual Shifting, Zwifters will also need to make sure Zwift is updated to version 1.50, which will be rolling out between Wednesday October 11 and Friday October 13.

Zwift Hub One is available for purchase on Wednesday (11/10/2023). Zwift Hub, with a choice of traditional 8-12 speed cassette, will continue to be sold under the new name, Zwift Hub Classic. Both trainers are priced at $599/€599/£549 and include one year of Zwift membership.

Cycology Aloha Handlebar Tape – $24.95

Cycology Handlebar Tape combines colorful and lively designs with reliable grip and comfort, making it the perfect stylish update for transforming the feel and appearance of your ride.

The bar tape is specifically designed for increased grip, extra padded comfort and shock absorption for your hands, and it can be quickly and easily fitted.

Comes in a set of two bar tape rolls with matching Cycology end plugs to give your bike an original eye catching finish.

Chuck Peña PEZ sez: PEZ readers will know I’m a fan of Cycology kit because the graphics/designs by Sarina Tomchin are just plain fun. And IMHO you can never have too much fun (and IMHO too many riders are too serious and take themselves too seriously). So why not have some fun with bar tape too?

PEZ readers probably know I opted out of my trademark #realmenridepink handlebar tape for Cycology’s See Me (but with lots of pink) handlebar tape when I put a new bar and stem on my Colnago V3 as part of my Shimano 105 Di2 build.

I get lots of compliments and “Where can I get that bar tape?”

More recently, my wife’s handlebar tape was getting pretty worn so I replace it with Cycology’s Rock’N’Roll handlebar tape.

I love rock’n’roll … So put another dime in the jukebox, baby

So when it came time to replace the handlebar tape on my Felt FC, I decided to go the Cycology route with their Aloha handlebar tape. Predominantly red, not pink. But with some pink flowers as part of the design. However, an appropriate theme given that I spent all my summers as a kid at my grandparents’ house on Oahu (Aiea Heights overlooking Pearl Harbor), my mom grew up on Maui, and I still have a lot of relatives in Hawaii (mostly on Kauai).

Before: #realmenridepink

After: #aloha

Life behind bars (NOTE the Hawaiian state flag on my top tube)

PEZ readers will know that wrapping handlebar tape is probably my least favorite thing to do when it comes to working on my bicycle. But for whatever reason, I’m able to more easily work with Cycology handlebar tape — getting it to stretch to the right tightness to wrap cleanly and evenly. And for once, I was able to get it “right” around the brakes in one fell swoop. Just don’t confuse luck with skill.

But Cycology handlebar tape is more than just the art work that sets it apart from the crowd. I ride without gloves and it has enough cushioning for me. YMMV. The surface is glossy so looks “slick,” but is actually quite grippy. Again, YMMV.

One of the least expensive and easiest ways to freshen up your bike is new handlebar tape. If you feel like trying something more than boring black or classic white, Cycology has 17 different designs that are anything but ordinary.

BMC Teammachine R: Redefine RacingPartnership between BMC and Red Bull Advanced Technologies strengthens with launch of all-new Teammachine R – the ultimate race bike

Grenchen, Switzerland

Create SpeedAt the heart of BMC lies the mission to Create Speed, a mission which comes to life every day when riders from all around the world race. Teammachine has led the way at the Tour de France, the Olympics, World Championships and all the one-day Classics. But what comes next? With a self-imposed responsibility to keep innovating and disrupting the boundaries, BMC came up with a goal: to create the ultimate race bike.

‘R’ is for RacingBMC took its best-performing bike the Teammachine SLR and set out on a challenge in partnership with RBAT, to create the ultimate race bike which would perfectly combine weight, aerodynamics and power transfer.

Forged on the cols of the Swiss Alps, hardened over the cobbles of Carrefour de l’Arbre and perfected within the echelons of the Grand Tours, Teammachine R is a race bike built for all parcours – one bike to rule them all.

Lightweight aeroThe result of countless hours analysing the best possible carbon infrastructure to keep weight scant yet responsive, is a frame and fork nudging the scales at 910 grams and 345 grams respectively, making the Teammachine R a 7.00kg (size 54) all-purpose race weapon.

Winning partnershipA strategic, long-term partnership between the BMC Impec Lab and RBAT has seen the sharing of engineering expertise and intellectual knowledge with the goal of challenging what is possible. Mass material and structural simulations, computational fluid dynamics analysis and wind tunnel validation aided the production of Teammachine R. Taking research from the world of F1 and applying this to bicycle innovation has resulted in developments never seen before within the world of cycling:

Halo ForkThe ultrawide parallel fork legs are unlike anything else in the peloton. When rotating at speed, the front wheel produces a significant amount of turbulent air. BMC increased the inner fork spacing to allow that turbulent air to be shuttered away from the frame and reduce aero stall. The result is cleaner air that hugs the frame longer resulting in a significant drag reduction.

Stiffness where it mattersTaking full advantage of the new UCI rules, the revised bottom bracket design optimizes surface area for cleaner airflow. Additionally, the aero shaped design reduces the distance between the frame and the rear wheel helping to keep airflow attached to the rim as opposed to being separated by the tire. The result? The best power transfer that BMC has ever created.

Reduced frontal areasKey tube shapes were completely redesigned to reduce frontal exposure while still maintaining a perfect balance of stiffness and compliance.

Deeper horizontal shapesBy expanding the horizontal profile in key locations, the Teammachine R is able to respond more effectively across a wider range of yaw angles.

Integrated bottle cagesThe proprietary bottle cages on the Teammachine R actually make the bike faster with bottles onboard.

Stealth dropout designDesigned cohesively within the frame and fork of the bike, the hidden dropouts keep airflow tidy.

Rider feelAs with the recently launched Speedmachine, RBAT provided invaluable insight into the notion of ‘Driver Feel’ and how the driver is connected and feels at one with the car in top level motorsport. Applying this to cycling, BMC was able to delve deeper into ‘Rider Feel’ and incorporate the notion that understanding how a bike will react on the roads, leads to better predictability and handling for the rider, and ultimately more confidence to ride at speed.

Stefan Christ, Head of R&D at BMC commented: “Merging the meticulous engineering approach from F1 with the bicycle knowledge from the BMC Impec Lab was what we needed to keep pushing boundaries and make this huge step in performance.”

Rob Gray, Technical Director of RBAT commented: “Collaborating with BMC has taught us a huge amount about bikes and it’s been fascinating seeing the result of shared knowledge between these two industries. In this project we added more CFD simulations of different conditions than would be typically undertaken. Adding more points to analyse helped us deep-dive into the areas where performance increases are fundamental. The end result of Teammachine R is something we’re extremely proud of.”

Raphael Meyer, CEO of Tudor Pro Cycling commented: “At Tudor Pro Cycling, we are always pushing the boundaries of what is possible in terms of performance. To work together with such an innovative brand as BMC, to have the chance to test products in their development phase and influence the outcome is an advantage that we value to the highest level. The riders who had the chance to test the new BMC Teammachine R and our Innovation Team are convinced by the way it performs. We already won two races with this bike and are confident it will help us get more.”

Pinarello Takes MYWAY Platform to the Next LevelComprehensive range of colour options now available for the new DOGMA X as well as DOGMA F

Pinarello has launched the latest incarnation of its innovative MYWAY platform, allowing users to customise the brand-new DOGMA X as well as the DOGMA F, whilst also updating its comprehensive range of colour options.

DOGMA X was launched in four colourways last month but is now available in a myriad of new Xolar and Mono combinations.

For the first time as well, DOGMA F is now offered in bespoke Speedster and Sonic paint schemes as well as the popular Mono and Faded designs.

Eight completely new colours – Electro Lime, Orange and Violet, Racing Green, Formula Grey, Formular Green, Black and Champion Gold – have been added to the platform, the latter of which is a nod to bespoke colour scheme Tom Pidcock has chosen to deploy on his prototype DOGMA XC mountain bike since winning the Olympic Cross Country discipline at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.

Gold and Borealis Blue decals have also been introduced to the product offering while Yellow Gold, Golden Yellow and Transparent Carbon have all been enhanced from their previous guises.

In total, the updated MYWAY system will allow cyclists to choose from seven different graphic layouts and 23 different colours, five types of decals, and two different finishes.

Pinarello launched MYWAY in 2022, providing customers with a fun, immersive and realistic 3D experience, allowing them to customise the look of its flagship bikes, which can then be made into reality.

Every custom MYWAY frame is considered a true work of art, as each unique design is recreated by hand by skilled craftsmen at Pinarello’s headquarters in Villorba, Treviso. Indeed, the production process of MYWAY designs is so technical, that only the brand’s best and most experienced painters work on the projects, with most having over 30 years’ experience.

Creating a masterpieceThe process starts with the careful preparation of each frame. The first coating is meticulously hand-polished to create a perfectly smooth and flat surface, free from any pores that could disrupt the final finish.

Once the surface is perfectly smooth, the frame is moved to the painting department where it gets thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the painting. The frame is then precisely wrapped and taped before any secondary layers of paint are applied, and after removing the protective films, the finishing details and shading are all carefully applied with the use of an air brush and a precision spray gun.

Each step requires several hours of drying and curing time, making this a lengthy and demanding process. Once painting is completed, our team applies a gloss or matt finish – both in this care – and a transparent protective film.

The frame is then allowed to rest for 24 hours before the final inspection and polishing. The final step is the application of our Decaplus decals, which are baked onto the frame. These have been specially designed to reduce weight when compared to undercoating decals, and they also allow us to produce an incredibly smooth surface while also using a beautiful range of colours, such as these metallic decals.

After that, all that remains is a final check and clean before the frame is ready to go for a full technical inspection around all screws, threads and the seatpost closure, before being assembled into a truly unique dream bike.
